This is our family's healthcare story
In April 2011, the lives of Carissa’s family changed forever with the birth of her second child. He was born with what the insurance industry calls a “pre-existing medical condition.” Her son’s condition is incurable and life-threatening: he does not breathe in his sleep. He requires a machine to breathe for him and a nurse watching him to keep him safe each night.
Private insurance companies rarely cover in-home nursing, even for the sickest kids. Due to the severity of his medical condition, Carissa’s son falls under Iowa’s Medicaid program. Carissa knows the healthcare crisis in Iowa from the inside. And she will work tirelessly on behalf of her constituents to address it.
